About Us
Christians only, but not the only Christians
The Evangelical Christian Church in Canada (Christian Disciples) is a mainstream, non-denominational Christian body serving congregations, clergy and ministries from coast to coast.
Our Purpose
To restore the church to its New Testament pattern.
We are an evangelical body of believers in the Barton Stone tradition, seeking to restore the church to the simple pattern of the New Testament. We speak where the Scriptures speak and remain silent where the Scriptures are silent, holding to unity in the essentials, liberty in the non-essentials, and love in all things.
We recognize the Lordship and Headship of Jesus Christ over His church. Our congregations are autonomous and are led by elders and deacons; the denomination exists to serve them — affirming clergy, providing credentials and training, and gathering the whole body for fellowship and instruction.
Holy Communion is offered to all Christians. Baptism is by immersion for new Christians, and the prior baptism of those transferring from other denominations is recognized and accepted. Both women and men are ordained to the ministry, normally following theological study.
Every year our member clergy and churches gather at the General Assembly for training and fellowship, and regional groups meet through the year to build relationships and share information and ideas. Congregations take part in cultural and charitable work in their own communities, as well as in world development and local and international mission projects.
The Design, 1978
The church is governed by the decisions of delegates at General Assemblies, with resolutions implemented by each congregation and church unit.
Evangelical Fellowship of Canada
We are affiliated with The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and are a sister body to the Evangelical Christian Church in North America.
